This term, our Reception class have been on an exciting learning journey as they explored the topic of Transport. The children were introduced to the imaginative and colourful picture book The Hundred Decker Bus by Mike Smith, which sparked their curiosity and inspired a wide range of creative and hands-on activities.
The children began by reading and writing about different types of vehicles, learning new vocabulary and sharing their own experiences of travel. Using the story as a springboard, they designed their own extraordinary vehicles and even drew their very own “100 Decker Buses” – complete with moving split-pin wheels that brought their creations to life!
To link their learning with the world around them, Reception also explored maps and journeys. They followed a map of the school to find key locations, developing their understanding of direction and spatial awareness. Afterwards, they created their own maps of journeys to school, thinking carefully about what they see along the way.
One of the highlights of the topic was making a messy map – a large-scale collaborative map made using real-life objects such as toy cars, building blocks, string, fabric, and natural materials. This hands-on activity allowed the children to represent roads, buildings, and landmarks in a tactile and creative way, helping them understand how maps represent real places.
Throughout the topic, the children also had the opportunity to build their own vehicles using a variety of construction materials, drawing on ideas from The Hundred Decker Bus to inspire their designs.
It’s been a fantastic topic full of imagination, discovery, and creativity. The children have shown great enthusiasm and teamwork as they explored the world of transport in such meaningful and memorable ways
